The Kua number (also written Gua number) is a core concept in Flying Star feng shui. It's a single digit from 1 to 9, derived from your birth year and gender, that sorts every person into one of two groups: East or West.
Each group has four directions that support you — for wealth, health, relationships, and personal growth — and four that tend to work against you. Orienting your desk, bed, or front door toward your lucky directions is one of the most common ways feng shui is applied in daily life.
Unlike a horoscope, the Kua number doesn't change over time and doesn't require updating — it's fixed at birth and calculated the same way every time.
Find your Kua year. The feng shui calendar year begins around February 4th, not January 1st. If you were born before February 4th, your Kua year is the previous calendar year.
Reduce the year to one digit. Add the last two digits of your Kua year together. If the result has two digits, add those together again.
Apply the gender formula. Men and women use different formulas, and the formula itself changes for anyone born in the year 2000 or later.
Resolve the number 5. Kua number 5 doesn't stand on its own — men use 2 instead, women use 8.

Only the year affects your Kua number — except close to the Chinese New Year boundary (February 4th), where your birth date determines which year's formula applies to you.

Kua numbers 1, 3, 4, and 9 belong to the East group. Kua numbers 2, 6, 7, and 8 belong to the West group. Each group's lucky directions are mirror opposites of the other's.
You don't need it. The Kua calculation only uses your birth year (and date, near the February boundary) — not the time of day.
Traditional Kua calculations are based on sex assigned at birth, since the formula itself is what the tradition defines by gender.
Most discrepancies come from the February 4th boundary being ignored, or an incorrect gender formula being applied for births after the year 2000. Double check your birth date against the boundary rule above.
