Guide

How marriage duration is actually calculated

Most date calculators just divide the milliseconds between two dates, which quietly treats every month as the same length. That's not how a calendar actually works — some months have 28 days, some have 31 — so results can drift.

This calculator instead subtracts your wedding date from the target date component by component — year, month, day, hour, and minute — the same way you'd count it out on a calendar by hand.

Enter a wedding date that hasn't happened yet, and the calculation simply reverses, showing a countdown instead of a duration.

01

Subtract each unit. Year, month, day, hour, and minute are each compared between your wedding date and the target date.

02

Borrow where needed. If the day count goes negative, it borrows from the actual length of the previous month — so short months and leap years come out right.

03

Roll up the remainder. Extra months become years, extra minutes become hours, exactly like a calendar and a clock.

04

Reverse for future dates. A wedding date that hasn't happened yet turns the same calculation into a countdown.

Questions

Frequently asked

How is my marriage duration calculated?

By comparing your wedding date and the target date component by component — year, month, day, hour, and minute — the same way you'd count it out on a calendar, rather than averaging milliseconds.

Does it handle leap years and short months correctly?

Yes. When the day count goes negative, the calculator borrows from the actual number of days in the month before it — including February in leap years — so the year/month/day split stays accurate.

Can I use this to count down to a future wedding?

Yes. Enter a wedding date that hasn't happened yet, and the result automatically becomes a countdown instead of a duration.

Is my wedding date stored anywhere?

No. Like every calculator on this site, this runs entirely in your browser — your dates are never sent to a server or stored anywhere.

What if I don't know the exact time we got married?

That's fine — the date alone is enough. The calculator treats your wedding date as starting at midnight, so the hours and minutes shown reflect clock time elapsed since then, not your actual ceremony time.

When is my next anniversary?

Underneath your results, "Next anniversary" shows how many days remain until your anniversary date comes around again, and which year it will be.
